A sensational sleeper of the vintage, this 2005 (a 1,300-case blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Malbec) was fashioned from remarkably low yields of 22 hectoliters per hectare by the brilliant Stephane Derenoncourt. It is a surprisingly big, full-bodied, deep, concentrated wine offering excellent notes of creme de cassis, smoke, licorice, forest floor, and spice. A remarkable effort for its humble appellation and price, it should drink well for 5-7 years.
